Our Journey back to Homesteading

“Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not Christians will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others."
-- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

Aquaponics update

It’s been several weeks now. The Aquaponics has been doing well based on Murray Hallam’s method and using IBC Totes.

You can see some of the leaves are seeing some punishment. I let my PH get a little out of hand. For some reason it keeps drifting higher and higher. Need to track down the issue.

Some quick information on PH. PH is neutral at 7, it’s acidic below 7 and alkaline above 7. Fish prefer the water to be closer to an 8, but the plants prefer the water to be closer to a 6. Ideally you want the water to be about a 7 or neutral. Directly in between making both sides happy. However you will want to normally run your system about 6.5 – 7.

You see, your aquaponics system should always slowly head acidic. There is a long explanation why. But for the purpose of this lets just say it does. So while the PH is always dropping you will just want to gently bring it back up to 6.5 – 7. You don’t want to go higher than 7. The more alkaline your water the more your nutrients get locked into the water and the plants can’t absorb them.

This is why I have issues with my leaves below.

For now enjoy some pictures:

Everything looks pretty healthy here, the cucumbers know no bounds 🙂

Here you can really see the damage on the leaves.

Didn’t take long to be able to start harvesting, although the initial harvest is a bit small.

Bees! I’m attracting Bees, this is amazing and fun to watch.
