I finished cutting up my IBC totes tonight for the aquaponics setup we are building. And I was sitting there looking at the scraps and thinking that surely I could use some of that.
The resulting scrap was 2 metal bottoms the are like a pallet to be used with a fork lift. A scrap piece of plastic cut off the top of the fish tank. And finally 2 middles. Essentially you cut the top 14 inches off and the bottom 16 inches off and as a result you end up with a scrap band of both cage and plastic.
It’s these middles that I had an idea. The metal cage portion could be hammered into the ground pretty easily. Now the outside could be decorated, painted or disguised. You now have a raised bed, wicking bed, or anything else you might imagine using this for.
It’s important that you still prep the metal. Make sure you clean up the burrs and also shoot some cold galvanizing spray paint to prevent rust.
I think I’m going to dig down in the center. Add a 6 mil liner and build out a wicking bed. Sounds like an awesome addition to my aquaponics. I could probably even change out water in my aquaponics and use that water in the beds. Or try the fertilizer coming from the BSF LarvaeLayer.
More updates in the future.
